About STRATA

The STRATA collection represents a major departure from my previous abstract work. While retaining the color, energy, and boldness that I’m known for, STRATA moves beyond the traditional canvas into a completely new three-dimensional form.

My work begins with discovery rather than a predetermined destination.

Whether I am working with landscapes, abstractions, or the human form, and especially when creating the dimensional works of STRATA, my process is intuitive, iterative, and responsive. I may begin with a subject, color, shape, or image, but I don't begin knowing exactly where the work will lead.

I respond to what is happening in front of me. One decision suggests another as I add, remove, rearrange, and reconsider. The process is not random; it is a continual series of visual judgments about color, balance, and how the elements relate to one another. I discover the work through making it rather than simply executing a predetermined idea.

With STRATA, this process becomes especially physical. I bring together individually hand-painted canvas elements, moving and rearranging them as relationships emerge among color, relief, and shadow.

How the work is experienced and how it is created are equally important. STRATA draws the viewer in. The viewer becomes immersed in the world STRATA creates, absorbed in the experience.

Each STRATA composition is an original, one-of-a-kind piece. Compositions range from 12” × 12” to 40” × 36” and can be commissioned in other sizes.
